Christmas arrived a couple of days early for five children in Houma when Terrebonne Parish sheriff’s deputies showed up at their door with armfuls of presents.

The Sheriff’s Office visited Misty Givens’ family Tuesday as part of its Cops Who Care program, which Capt. Dawn Foret said is in its 13th year. She said the program benefits residents throughout the year, such as by providing backpacks for children when the school year starts.

Detective Danielle LeBoeuf said the Sheriff’s Office purchased the gifts after reviewing local schools’ nominations of deserving families.

I have kids, and I can’t imagine not being able to provide for them, LeBoeuf said. Anything we can do to help a mother like that, I’m all about it.

The children, who attend Southdown Elementary School in Houma, convinced their mother to let them open one gift each before Christmas.

Rieck was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso the night of the fight. Riecks roommate said he was in fear of his life when the altercation happened because Rieck had threatened him with a gun. When investigators searched the home for the gun, they found several folders containing photographs of naked girls who appeared to be between the ages of 12 and 17. A loaded handgun was also found, officials said. Sheriffs investigators obtained a warrant for Riecks and charged him with sexual explotation of children, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a felon.
