Richard Talley, 56, said his thefts began in about 2007, when the Internal Revenue Service “was threating (sic) to place me in jail, take all my assets and put my family in the streets,” the unsigned, undated, type-written note asserts. “Seeing no way out I took money,” he wrote in the note that that was not addressed, but appeared to be written for his wife, Cheryl Talley. “As the company continued to do poorly I took more money,” he wrote. “My own ego is so big I could not admit defeat.” A check of county and state records did not show any IRS liens filed against Talley or his company from that time period forward. He did file for personal bankruptcy in May 2002, but records from that case were not immediately available. Talley said he chose suicide when his thefts were discovered by Title Resource Guarantee Company in Texas, for whom he sold title insurance policies.
